We are in the ubiquitous era that the digital technology has been in a part of daily live. There are so many digital platforms for example home automation, digital payment, digital health care or digital entertainment that has changed the way of living.
In the Android TV Summit 2019, it focused on digital entertainment revolution. Since the strong competition in digital television and streaming content in this year. Apple just debuted the Apple TV Plus and Disney has launched its streaming service in November. In part of Google, the company have tried to push Google products and services to dominate in television industry and media industry.
In the Thailand market, to compare with Apple TV and Android TV Box, I believe that the majority of the households will consume entertainment content thru Android TV Box more than Apple TV. Because of the Android TV Box is cheaper than Apple TV and there are many brands for consumers to select.
In the summit, Reed Anderson, CTO of TRUE ID shared the TRUE ID business and announce to be a partner with Netflix. That means from now on TRUE ID customers can watch Netflix’s content from TRUE ID Box.
The local operators who have already provided streaming services in Thailand, they are currently trying so hard to improve their products and services to meet customer expectations. However they have to figure out regarding new business models and business direction in the future plan as well. Because consumers have many choices to subscribe streaming services not only Netflix anymore. The subscription model might not cover the ROI. According to the TRUE ID, they provide SVOD, TVOD and AVOD. The services has bundled with telco packages and connected to TRUE privilege as TRUE Point to redeem the points to watch free content in TRUE ID.
From my point of views, there are several options that will be more benefits for customers to consume free content but annoying with advertising or subscribe some packages from the content streaming providers with no advertising. However the behaviour of Thai people who do not pay for subscriptions but consume free content or piracy content instead. It will be challenging for the service providers how to change free customers to be paid customers or how to generate revenue from advertising model.
